Partido
Teatro Ipanema
Presented by Tap in Rio
“Partido” is a reflection on the experience of an Afro-Brazilian immigrant and artist living in the US, told through a mixed language of tap and percussive dance, samba, house, and original, live music, making this particularly relevant and important. It reflects the different musical and choreographic languages of both company directors. As a composer and musician, Richardson is particularly drawn to jazz, soul, Afro-Cuban, and house music. In addition to being recognized as one of the leading tap dancers of his generation, Sandoval brings intimate knowledge and expertise of traditional Afro-Brazilian forms, like samba and maracatu, as well as current urban dances like passinho, and has become known for merging tap technique with these styles. The common thread of their collaboration is the shared African roots of these forms. They mix choreographic and musical vocabularies to highlight how African-American and Afro-Brazilian forms are connected.
