Explosive tap dance meets hot jazz rhythms in acclaimed company Dorrance Dance’s intoxicating production of the holiday classic. Danced to Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s marvelously inventive 1960 reinterpretation of the classic Tchaikovsky score, The Nutcracker Suite boogies, slides, struts, and dives through the magical story of a young girl and her fantastical Christmas adventure. Along with collaborators Hannah Heller and Josette Wiggan, Artistic Director Michelle Dorrance transforms the Sugar Plum Fairy into a slinky Sugar Rum Cherry, the “March of the Toy Soldiers” becomes a swinging brass “Peanut Brittle Brigade” romp, and the original ballet’s pageant of national dances gets a fresh new 21st-century twist.

Dorrance Dance | The Nutcracker Suite - New York City Center

From the fleet-footed imaginations of tap dance stars Michelle Dorrance and Josette Wiggan, and their collaborator and downtown theater darling Hannah Heller, comes this jazzy new vision of the holiday tradition. Part seasonal concert, part tap ballet, The Nutcracker Suite is a toe-tapping, hand-clapping revelation set to Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s extraordinary arrangement of the Tchaikovsky classic.

The festivities begin with a host of holiday favorites, from “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” to “Jingle Bells,” interpreted by “powerhouse” (The Washington Post) vocalist Aaron Marcellus and Dorrance's incomparable dancers, accompanied by live music. Then it’s through the glittering curtain to an uptown Christmas party, where this Nutcracker story begins.

Whether it’s a tap battle with the Rat King or a big band Waltz of the Flowers—and don’t forget the Soft-Shoe of the Snowflakes—Dorrance and her collaborators offer a joyful riff on beloved material that’s the perfect start to your family’s holiday season.

Join a mixed bill of dance performances built during residencies at Kaatsbaan, which highlights Kaatsbaan’s dual role as incubator and presenter. Limón Dance Company previews a performance of a new creation by Bessie Awardee Kayla Farrish that examines two thematically aligned works by José Limón. Redes (Nets) (1951) is a representation of collective work and unity, and El Grito (The Scream) (1952) is an awakening of consciousness. Farrish, who has roots as an African American woman from the south, connects the work to the displacement of colored bodies and a continuous seeking for identity and community—themes Limón explored over 70 years ago.

Boca Tuya performs Like Those Playground Kids at Midnight, a shapeshifting duet developed at Kaatsbaan in 2023. Boca Tuya is led by queer Puertorriqueño choreographer and director Omar Román De Jesús. He describes this piece as “a beacon of defiance, encouraging everyone to embrace their uniqueness and challenge the boundaries that confine them.” The rhythmic complexity and daring physicality invite us to explore the mysterious landscapes of desire, identity, and aspiration. Omar was the inaugural Baryshnikov Arts Fellow at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, a 2023 Dance Magazine Harkness Promise Awardee, and a 2022 Princess Grace Award Winner in Choreography.

The program also features a performance by Music From The Sole, including material from a new work-in-development that explores the profound link between tap dance, Afro-Brazilian, and house music. The work is being created by 10 dancers and musicians in an intertwined process, demonstrating the movement and music of tap. Company dancers perform with their trademark embrace of tap’s Afro-diasporic roots and connection to various forms of music, such as jazz, funk, soul, house, samba, and hip-hop. Support for Music From The Sole provided by Works & Process LaunchPAD.

Vancouver, BC - SOUNDspace

Summoning thunder and lightning through the soles of their feet, Dorrance Dance honours the past and the future of tap in SOUNDspace.

The work was originally created as a site-specific piece that explored the unique acoustics of St. Marks Church in New York City through the myriad sounds and textures of the feet. Since adapted for various spaces, SOUNDspace puts the uniquely American art form fully on display. Channeling great tap masters of the past, the members of the company pay homage to the rich lineage and history of the genre.

Dorrance Dance explores new possibilities of the relationship between sound and movement, expanding the audience for tap. Whether it’s the glissando slide of socks, the slap of bare feet or the roar of heels, the tonal variations and dynamic range create an accompanying score that moves from silence to all-out cacophony.

SOUNDspace is a breathtaking meeting of past traditions and contemporary techniques. As the virtuoso display of physical percussion gives rise to a wall of sound, the performers unite, building a syncopated conflagration that will burn down the house.

Dorrance Dance
July 19-23, 2023

Based in New York City, crowd-pleasing Pillow favorite Dorrance Dance was founded in 2011 by Artistic Director Michelle Dorrance—recipient of the 2013 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award—with the goal to engage with audiences on a musical and emotional level while sharing the complex history and powerful legacy of tap dance. This summer, the company will be performing SOUNDspace, one of the early works that brought Michelle Dorrance to prominence, on the occasion of its 10th anniversary, including never-before-seen elements created specifically for the Ted Shawn Theatre. The program will also feature 45th & 8th, a new work featuring the original compositions of “breathtaking vocalist” Aaron Marcellus (The New York Times).

With a long history of performances at the Pillow, Dorrance Dance’s work challenges the audience’s preconceptions of tap dance. Dorrance Dance received a Bessie Award in 2011 for the inaugural performances of Remembering Jimmy and Three to One and in 2015 for The Blues Project, a collaboration with co-creators Dormeshia, Michelle Dorrance, Derick K. Grant, and musician Toshi Reagon alongside her band BIGLovely, which premiered at the Pillow in 2013. The company has performed to critical acclaim in many venues across the U.S. including The Joyce Theater, The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, and Vail Dance Festival—and internationally in Canada, Spain, Germany, and Hong Kong. Michelle Dorrance breaks the mold of tap dance by experimenting with the emotional range of the form “while exposing its true nature: that it is music” (The New York Times).
