I’m a composer, performer, and multi-instrumentalist focusing on upright and electric bass, as well as a member of the award winning tap dance company, Dorrance Dance, the indie band Darwin Deez, and co-creator of Music From The Sole, an afro-Brazilian tap dance and live band show. I learned rhythm and blues at an early age from a family of musicians where everyone could play at least a little piano and everyone was expected to sing. A Tucson, AZ native, I studied at Bard College and have been working as a professional musician in New York City for nearly two decades.
Current Projects
Dorrance Dance is an award winning tap dance company and the brainchild of my dear friend and collaborator Michelle Dorrance, a MacArthur “genius” award winning dancer and choreographer. Since 2011, she’s taken this company to the forefront of tap dance, assembling a murderously talented group of dancers, musicians, and choreographers, not to mention the production and admin staff. The company has created original work for the Guggenheim rotunda, performed at The Kennedy Center, New York City Center, and in venues in France, Spain, England, Germany, Canada, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
An evening length dance and live music extravaganza, Music From The Sole is a live tap dance show that blurs the line between seeing an evening of dance and experiencing a live band. Co-created with Brazilian tap dancer and choreographer Leonardo Sandoval, the show draws heavily on the music of the African diaspora, including hip hop, Brazilian, afro-cuban, and jazz. In addition to performing at the prestigious Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Music From The Sole has also partnered with The National Dance Institute to begin offering tap dance and body percussion workshops to young performers!
Darwin Deez is as much a family as it is an indie band. We’ve traveled the world several times over and have played everything from a squatter house show in Athens, GA to the massive Glastonbury Festival in the UK.
Founder and namesake Darwin and I met working at a vegan restaurant in NYC in 2006. We were touring the east coast in a Toyota Tacoma as a duo until the British label Lucky Number Music released the debut album. He’s one of the best songwriters I know.
